Practicum & Internship

ABOUT US

At the St. George Counseling Clinic, we embrace our calling as wounded healers. Our clinicians are not exceptional because of their education but because we emphasize the need to do our own therapeutic work. This training program does not endorse compartmentalization but encourages development in all aspects of life: professional, personal, spiritual, and physiological. We endorse the principle that you cannot take another where you yourself are not willing to go.

Located in Wexford, Pennsylvania, we serve warriors of all types in person and through telehealth: combat veterans, silent sufferers, and those white-knuckling through life. We serve all in our community suffering from fragmented lives, hyper-vigilance, betrayal, and the "unseen wounds" of long-lasting guilt and shame.

We are not merely concerned with eliminating the unwanted symptoms presented by our patients, but rather we aim for psychological reorganization of the mind. Although approach psychotherapy from a psychodynamic orientation, we invite those who are being trained in other modalities. Furthermore, we are expanding to provide alternative, holistic approaches to facilitate the change that our clients desire.

This training program will facilitate a burgeoning clinician's "theory of mind" while sharpening therapeutic technique through real world clinical experience conducted under the supervision of a licensed clinician.

Our structured training program is not "learning on the fly." While affirming each trainee's preferred modality, this program will expose students to the psychodynamic tradition, Allender Theory and trauma-informed narrative care, and various bottom-up approaches in trauma treatment. Theoretical grounding is not the only aspect of clinical work. Several training sessions will also be devoted to mastery documentation, treatment planning, and ethical situations in counseling.

Structured Curriculum & Onboarding

Trainees may gain experience in Individual Counseling, Group Therapy, Intake & Assessment, and Administrative Tasks with a broad array of clients approaching therapy in private practice.

Building Diverse Clinical Experience

Succulent Plant Arrangement
Man Walking Briefcase

Clinical Experience is one half of the business of private practice. Trainees will gain experience in the business end of therapy: navigating billing & insurance, state and federal requirements for licensure and business, and various other administrative tasks.

Learning the Business of Psychotherapy

What does Athens have to do with Jerusalem?

This age old question ponders the relationship between the secular and the sacred; and it is pertinent to the Catholic Christian psychotherapist. How do I integrate faith with science? How does the Catholic spiritual tradition intersect with secular psychological theories?

St. George Counseling Clinic invites trainees into the learning process to discover how they will uniquely integrate faith in the therapeutic process.
